Jamaica
is famous for sun-kissed beaches and the natural, soothing beauty
of the countryside. It lies in the Northern Caribbean and is the
region's third largest island after Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti and
the Dominican Republic). Just 146 miles long, it is 51 miles at
its widest point. |
| |
|
| Jamaica's
name is derived from the aboriginal Indian Awawak word, "Xaymaca,"
meaning "land of wood and water" because of the
abundance of waterfalls, springs, streams and rivers that flow
from the forest-covered mountains to the fertile tropical plains. |

With
a diverse topography giving home to a multitude of plants,
flowers, birds and butterflies, animals, and scenery ranging from
breathtaking vistas to the humid lushness of a tropical morass,
Jamaica is a nature lover's paradise. |
| |
|
| Hills
and mountains dominate the Jamaican landscape as the island has a hilly
"back-bone" running from east to west, offering a myriad of
activities and sightseeing adventures. The trails available, though not
always marked encompass everything from a gentle ramble through one of
the recreational parks, to an energetic, machete-wielding hike through
almost untouched territory. |
| |
| It
is probable that almost everywhere you go in Jamaica, you will
hear music. It is the heart-beat of our lives, a means of worship,
of entertainment and of social commentary. A storehouse of our
culture, the interwoven rhythms lead further and further into our
past. You may know of Reggae, but once you are here you will have
the opportunity to experience some of our less known, but equally
moving, musical art forms. |

A
visit to Jamaica can be a great culinary adventure. Our cuisine is
as varied and delightful as our island's scenery, or the people
you will meet here. In our cooking, as in other aspects of our
lives, all the swirling cultural influences that formed our
society come together, creating a delicious melange of flavours to
tempt you. |
| |
|
| Food
also tends to be an important part of the Jamaican social scene so
when you stop for lunch, instead of wanting to "nyam and
scram"(eat and run), it could be a good time to stop and
"suss" (gossip) with the people around you. Food is
always a great ice-breaker in Jamaica. |

From
marine life to bird watching, cacti to orchids, the natural
Jamaica waits to share her glorious sights, and alluring
adventures, with you.
Stroll along the beach at sunrise and take in the crispness of the
world. Drift away with your beloved on a bamboo raft ride along
the scenic Rio Grande River or Martha Brae. Sip tropical libations
and watch the cliff divers at Rick's Café, on the western-most
tip of the island. |
| |
|
| Discover the
grandeur of Dunns River Falls. Snorkel or scuba dive and get closer to
nature. Listen to the beat of the reggae drums and dance the night away.
Savor the piquant quality of the Jamaican food. Stand beneath 1000 stars
at night. Come to Jamaica. It has everything! |
